What can I say, I’ve got the bug! We met Michelle and Patrick Dowd of Broad Run Vizslas through the relationship that Zoë had with their Zeke (full siblings from different litters). We spent a lot of time visiting with and talking to them about the things that they were doing with Zeke. At that time, we had only participated in junior level AKC Hunt Tests with Zoë. As the Dowd's began to develop an interest in the competitive sport of Field Trialing, I followed along with their second Vizsla Blaze. It was very exciting! Each week Blaze and her littermates would do some amazing stuff at the field trials, and I got to hear all about it. After a while, I wanted to also take part in those experiences with my own field dog. Lucky for me, Michelle and Patrick chose to breed Blaze in 2005.
What a wonderful experience! Michelle and I had become good friends and she invited me to also participate in the whelping process. In October of 2005, Blaze was ready to have her first babies! Michelle called and I drove up. That was a long night! Blaze and Michelle did wonderfully! I took notes and helped weigh each pup and took lots of pictures (see the photo gallery for a few)! Maybe one day one of us will post the narrative of that night. I can’t remember everything I wrote, but I seem to recall that some of it was rather funny as I was ‘punch drunk’ with tiredness - the last pup, Greta, was born after midnight!
Again, as I did with Zoë and her breeder Don, I made the drive up to see this litter of puppies very often! Finally, on December 7, 2005 we were ready to pick up our puppy! Since we had decided to go the competitive route with this puppy, we enlisted the assistance of Bob Seelye to pick which one we would be ours. My Bob had a secret favorite and so did I. In the end, neither of those two were the one that Bob Seelye recommended to us. I told my Bob that the decision was his. Since I loved each and every one of the pups after having spent every week interacting with them, any one of them would have met MY needs! My Bob chose to take Bob Seelye’s recommendation and we had our new baby girl! She was so tiny!
Tess has been competitive in field trials since six months of age. She completed her Puppy/Derby career as the #2 dog on the VCA Puppy/Derby Top Ten list! Her two littermates Greta and Boone were #1 and #3, respectively.
Tess was bred to Topper in March of 2009 and delivered a beautiful litter of 6 puppies on May 11, 2009; of which I kept her one and only son, Reece. Be sure to check the Puppies page for more info!
Tess is home now and I will be ‘learning the ropes’ for handling her in her Gun Dog Stakes later this year!
